On July 17, 2025, King Charles delivered his first speech to the new Labour Government in the House of Lords as part of the State Opening of Parliament which marks the commencement of the parliamentary year. The King’s Speech established the priorities of the new Labour Government.
One of the key moments during the King’s Speech was the announcement of a plan to invest in sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) which will transform the aviation sector and be a fundamental piece in contributing to combatting climate change. The speech highlighted the importance of creating legislation – a SAF bill – that addresses climate change, which is an issue that has been of immense importance to the King for many years. The King announced a number of initiatives promised by the new labour government that seek to advance environmental and sustainable technologies. One of the technologies mentioned was sustainable aviation fuel strategy, which to us as a creator of a biodiesel extraction technology, was intriguing.
Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) is a type of fuel that is derived from renewable sources, such as waste oils or agricultural residues. Unlike traditional jet fuel, SAF immensely reduces greenhouse gas emissions which make it an attractive solution that can aid the UK, and indeed the world of achieving Net Zero emissions. SAF can be blended with traditional jet fuel and used in existing aircraft without the need for adaptations, which would allow existing aircraft operators to begin using SAF to fuel their flights efficiently.
The spending on SAF will be used to fund research and development to advancing technologies, infrastructure, as well scaling up production capacities.
Through collaboration between industry leaders, research bodies, and international institutions the new Labour government has aspirations to turn the UK into a global leader in regards to SAF innovation. The approach outlined by the government is comprehensive and recognises that if we hope to achieve our environmental targets we must first establish cooperation across the entire supply chain, from production to distribution to the point where it is used in planes.
This injection of investment into SAF is additionally expected to convince airlines to adopt sustainable substitutes. Airlines, fuel producers, and technology developers are all poised to benefit from this increased focus and support.
